Topics & Facilitators Great Decisions 2010, Wednesdays 7:30-9:30 pm

Great Decisions 2010 will be co-sponsored by Interweave, the Center for Wholistic Living and the League of Women Voters of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit. Classes will be held Wednesday evenings at Interweave’s Summit Center, located at Calvary Church Parish Hall in Summit (31 Woodland Ave). The cost will be $90 for the full course, $15 per class Here are the topics with the dates

Feb. 17 Special Envoys

Special envoys can help bring attention and diplomatic muscle to resolve conflicts and global challenges, but they also bring with them their own special problems.

Feb 24 Preventing Genocide

Considering the lessons learned from the intervention in Kenya in 2007, what does the UN’ s emerging “responsibility to protect” mean?

March 3 Global Crime

April 7 Peace building and conflict resolution
FACILITATOR: Foster Osborne , Business owner
US campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that military force alone cannot ensure peace in all conflicts. How can the US successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft?

Course materials are provided by the Foreign Policy Association (who organizes these groups all over the country). Participants receive a manual so they can read the chapter pertaining to the subject of the evening beforehand. The facilitator will show a DVD with experts as an introduction and discussion follows. At the end of the evening, participants fill out an opinion ballot that will be sent to the Foreign Policy Association. The FPA will collate the results and deliver them to the Secretary of State and other groups in Washington DC.
